About The Position

The Additive Manufacturing (AM) Engineering Intern supports the design, development, and production of hardware using metal additive manufacturing processes. This internship provides hands-on experience in aerospace-focused metal AM operations while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams. Under the guidance of senior engineers, the intern will assist in process development, documentation, equipment support, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role is ideal for students pursuing Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, or Materials Engineering who are interested in advanced manufacturing technologies within a regulated aerospace environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
  • Foundational knowledge of manufacturing processes and engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with CAD software and ability to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Basic understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments.
  • U.S. Citizenship required; must be eligible to work on ITAR-controlled projects and obtain/maintain a DoD security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on exposure to additive manufacturing through coursework, research, or lab experience (metal AM preferred).
  • Academic or project-based exposure to CNC machining, heat treatment, or related manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with DfAM concepts through coursework or projects.
  • Experience using Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for data analysis.
  • Exposure to aerospace or regulated manufacturing environments through internships or academic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and documenting additive manufacturing processes for hardware production.
  • Support cross-functional teams to help meet production schedules and on-time delivery goals.
  • Apply basic Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) concepts under supervision to support part optimization.
  • Participate in R&D and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with equipment setup, monitoring, and routine maintenance activities for AM systems.
  • Follow company safety policies and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Research emerging AM materials, technologies, and industry trends to support engineering initiatives.
  • Support review and documentation of customer requirements for AM parts and processes.
  • Assist in generating manufacturing documentation, work instructions, and process plans.
  • Contribute to data collection, testing, and evaluation of additive manufacturing builds.
  • Assist in troubleshooting basic process or equipment issues under engineer supervision.
  • Support quality documentation efforts and compliance with AS9100 standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and technicians on process improvement projects.
  • Maintain accurate engineering notes, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
