About The Position

We’re looking for an Adapted Physical Education Teacher who’s passionate about helping every student access and benefit from physical activity in a meaningful way. In this role, you’ll design and deliver creative, individualized physical education programming for students ages 3–22 with complex learning needs, including Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and significant medical or sensory challenges. You’ll work closely with a multidisciplinary team to adapt activities, build motor skills, and create inclusive opportunities for students to grow physically, socially, and emotionally. Requirements

  • Must have Bachelor’s degree
  • Certified by Department of Education as a Physical Education Teacher with Adaptive Physical Education endorsement or certifiable for such a position
  • Previous experience working with children with developmental disabilities
  • Ability to use good body mechanics
  • Demonstrate knowledge of students with special needs especially children with multiple disabilities
  • Ability to write reports in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrate flexibility to achieve goals of the school, educational program and individual needs of students
  • Current CPR certificate
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Meet DCYF and Department of Education requirements to work in a school
  • Will transport students or otherwise use agency or own vehicle to meet agency needs
  • Ability to lift independently up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to lift up to 90 pounds with another person
  • Ability to stand 70% of the shift
  • Ability to kneel, bend, and stoop for 40% of shift
  • Ability to move students on mats, requiring pushing, pulling and lifting

Responsibilities

  • Provide an Adapted Physical Education evaluation for each student and make recommendations for each student with special needs.
  • Provide Physical Education activities for all students enrolled at Cornerstone School grades preschool thru high school.
  • Provide individual and/or small group instruction in age appropriate physical activities.
  • Do classroom observations and/or screenings within the classrooms, or during PT, OT sessions in order to make recommendations for carry over instruction for many different settings.
  • Provide classroom consultation as needed or requested.
  • Participate in I.E.P. meetings to review evaluations and to recommend goals and objectives as requested.
  • Write reports upon completion of assessments.
  • Provide classroom coverage as a substitute teacher as needed when not providing Adaptive Physical Education services.
