Banner Health has opportunities for initiative-taking and passionate individuals to train to become Certified Pharmacy Technicians. The Pharmacy Technician Training Program will prepare Pharmacy Technician Trainees to support Pharmacists in improving patient safety, reducing medication errors, and increasing the efficiency in pharmacy. The Pharmacy Technician Training Program includes 18-weeks of didactic, simulation, experiential instruction in a hybrid learning environment: classroom and on-the-job activities with career advancement upon becoming certified. The program will be 18 weeks. You will be at BUMC Tucson (1625 N Campbell Ave,) Monday – Wednesday, 8AM – 4:30PM. Thursday and Friday of each week will be scheduled at your onsite location. Hours for Thursday and Friday may be day shift or evening shift. You will complete a two-week rotation within a pharmacy setting that is different than your homesite location (i.e. retail pharmacy or acute care). Hours for this rotation may vary between day and evening shift. After the trainee program the open position will be: Acute Pharmacy Technician at BUMC Tucson (1625 N Campbell Ave.) Acute Pharmacy Technician Trainee This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist and other pharmacy personnel. Performs routine duties in packaging, distribution and record keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients being served.

Requirements

  • Pharmacy Technician Trainee Licensure or Pharmacy Technician Trainee Registration required. Apply for licensure at https://pharmacy.az.gov/
  • AZ fingerprint clearance card is required by the state when applying for a pharmacy technician license.
  • Cost of first PTCB exam will be reimbursed upon a passing score. Candidates must apply for the PTCB exam upon successful completion of the final exam on the last day of class. Must select a date to sit for the exam within 90 days of completion of the program.
  • Personal time off requests during the learning program shall be minimized during the learning program and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Requires Pharmacy Technician trainee registration or licensure in the state of practice per state requirements. Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire. A fingerprint clearance card is no longer required for the trainee registration and must be submitted when the full licensure application is submitted.
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete 500 hours of on the job training.
  • Complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required.
  • Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task.
  • Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems.
  • Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.
  • Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Selects and/or prepares medications, under direct supervision, as indicated on the patient medication orders. Places medications in patient boxes or in designated area for pharmacist to check, sends/delivers medications to nursing units as required. May investigate missing medication requests.
  • Charges/credits patients for medications and intravenous solutions as appropriate. Restocks unused and credited returned medications. Maintain databases and troubleshoot automated technology malfunctions.
  • Attends to customers and answers telephones in a courteous and timely manner. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist.
  • Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
  • Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications repackaged.
  • Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
  • May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after they are checked by a pharmacist. Restocks medications to all areas outside automated dispensing technology which may include but not be limited to trays, code carts and emergency boxes. Investigates discrepancies in automated dispensing technology.
