The Acute Care RN provides and directs safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. Utilizing evidence-based practice, the RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates outcome-based care for a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, including post-operative, medical, telemetry, and neurologic patients. The RN supervises and coordinates care provided by LPNs, Patient Care Assistants, and other nursing team members, facilitating communication with physicians, patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members. The role adheres to MercyOne’s performance expectations and upholds the Mission, Vision, and Values of MercyOne.

  • Conducts an initial assessment to gather data within 30 minutes of patient arrival.
  • Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care.
  • Implements the outcome/goal-based plan of care, coordinating with team members.
  • Evaluates patient progress and revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed.
  • Communicates relevant clinical information to the team to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence and follows medication safety protocols.
  • Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable.
  • Provides age-appropriate care based on principles of growth and development.
  • Adheres to all safety, infection control, and colleague health policies.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Associate degree in nursing required.
  • Current Iowa RN license required (Illinois license if working in IL).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter training within three months of hire.
  • High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
