About The Position

Northwestern Medicine offers an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join The Canning Thoracic Institute (CTI) as part of its Thoracic Surgery Team. CTI collaborates across the Northwestern Medicine health system to deliver high-quality care for patients with chest diseases, promote clinical innovation and discovery, and improve lung health in the Greater Chicago Community. This role focuses on Advanced Lung Failure patients, primarily Lung Transplant and ECMO, working closely with the Lung Transplant Team to support a rapidly growing program. The APP will provide critical care management in the CTICU pre and post-transplant, as well as on the surgical floor for patient continuity. Key responsibilities include ventilator and ECMO management, bronchoscopies, and chest tube placement. OR assist for Lung Transplant and related procedures is possible. This is a 100% inpatient position. The APP will be responsible for daily patient rounds, developing and executing plans of care, coordinating with interdisciplinary team members and consultants, and performing necessary procedures.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing OR master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Acute care certification required for APRNs.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois (for APRNs).
  • Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois (for APRNs).
  • Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body as approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board (for APRNs).
  • Current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois (for PAs).
  • Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (issued by the American Heart Association) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required as specified by department.
  • Controlled substance license and DEA registration required as specified by the department.

Responsibilities

  • Provide critical care management in the CTICU pre and post-transplant.
  • Provide critical care management on the surgical floor to provide patient continuity.
  • Perform ventilator and ECMO management.
  • Perform bronchoscopies.
  • Perform chest tube placement.
  • Assist in OR for Lung Transplant and related procedures (possible).
  • Conduct daily patient rounds.
  • Develop and carry out plans of care.
  • Coordinate care with interdisciplinary team members and consultants.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
  • Be responsible for health outcome of an assigned patient population.
  • Confer with collaborating physician and other health professionals in area of clinical expertise.
  • Develop appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Mentor graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
  • Actively participate in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to area of expertise.
  • Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations in clinical area.
  • Provide direct clinical care to patients.
  • Prescribe/order medications, therapies; order/interpret laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges.
  • Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
  • Document in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed for which the Licensed Advanced Practice Provider is responsible.
  • Refer to other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Serve as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise.
  • Integrate research based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making.
  • Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation.
  • Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
  • Maintain certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and role model for "Patients First".
  • Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families.
  • Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff.
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
  • Provide formal education to both internal and external groups pertinent to area of specialty.
  • Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient population as appropriate.
