Who We Are: The Activity Therapy Department of Circles of Care provides activity therapy services to patient populations receiving psychiatric treatment. Services are provided in the inpatient adult and children’s units. The Activity Therapy Department is concerned with the application of activity-based therapy to work towards the improvement of skills, behavior, and knowledge necessary for effective functioning in daily living situations. Group topics and modalities are chosen to support the healthy aspects of each person, including their personal health goals and areas of meaning, to provide ongoing gratification of needs and a sense of achievement. Activity Therapy services are available to the units seven days per week. Services are provided directly and also through consultation with other unit staff. The primary mode of intervention is group facilitation. The Activity Therapy schedule is coordinated with other therapies that occur on the unit. Main Goals of The AT Department: To provide Activity Therapy services to all patients admitted to all psychiatric units to improve skills, behaviors, and knowledge necessary for more effective methods to deal with life problems and situations To provide a variety of therapeutic and rehabilitative activities to assist patients with developing and maintaining adaptive skills to improve functioning To provide leisure skill activities to give patients an opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes about meaningful leisure involvement and experiences To ensure a professional program that consists of goal-oriented, purposeful activity components under the supervision of a qualified individual To provide quality patient care by following hospital and department standards, adhering to standards of performance and job responsibilities, and participating in Robust Performance Improvement To enhance/encourage the patient’s maximum functional potential To facilitate/promote health and wellness To ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and personnel through risk reduction and management To function as an integral member of the healthcare team and to coordinate the provision of care with other services To serve as a patient advocate To expand staff knowledge base and incorporate current trends in healthcare practice through continued education
