About The Position

The position involves planning, directing, and coordinating an entire activity therapy program for special needs populations, such as inmates assigned to residential treatment units. Additionally, the role includes overseeing a general activity/recreational program for all inmates in the general population. The individual will develop, interpret, and monitor the implementation of program policies and procedures while supervising lower-level activity therapy staff. Responsibilities also include preparing and maintaining work-related documentation, assisting in budget preparation, and managing equipment and supply inventories. The position requires reviewing and maintaining records of inmate progress and conducting individual and group activity therapy activities. The individual will also oversee the maintenance of supplies and equipment, approve employee leave requests, and prepare performance evaluations. Participation in institutional committees and annual in-service training is expected, along with performing security functions such as controlling inmate movement.

Requirements

  • Completion of undergraduate core program in recreation or specialty area.
  • 24 months experience in activity therapy.
  • 12 months training or 12 months experience in supervisory principles/techniques.
  • Or completion of graduate core program in recreation or specialty area.
  • 12 months experience in activity therapy.
  • 12 months training or 12 months experience in supervisory principles/techniques.
  • Or 12 months experience as Activity Therapy Supervisor.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct and coordinate entire activity therapy program for special needs populations.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate entire general activity/recreational program for all inmates in general population.
  • Develop, interpret and monitor implementation of program policies and procedures.
  • Supervise lower-level activity therapy staff.
  • Prepare, maintain and oversee preparation and maintenance of work-related documentation.
  • Prepare or assist in preparation of budget.
  • Prepare requisitions for equipment and supplies, complete equipment and supply inventories.
  • Review, prepare and maintain records of inmate progress, attitude and adjustment.
  • Write training manuals.
  • Prepare reports regarding departmental activities and plans for problem correction.
  • Conduct individual and group activity therapy activities.
  • Oversee maintenance of supplies, equipment and work area.
  • Approve/disapprove employee leave requests.
  • Prepare and complete employee performance evaluations.
  • Serve on institutional committees.
  • Attend annual in-service training.
  • Control/restrict inmate movement and perform other security functions.
