About The Position

The Activity Coordinator’s primary function is to assist the Activity Program Director with the service and delivery of the resident activity program. In addition, this position will assist each resident with life enrichment opportunities and encourage each resident to be as independent as possible while pursuing life goals and activities of choice.

Requirements

  • Certified Nurse Aide that has completed a training course approved by the State or Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • Two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a patient activities program in a health care setting; or an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • Ability to understand, observe, and enforce infection control proce­dures related to facility services.
  • Ability to observe all facility safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and recognize potential physical, chemical, and electrical hazards and take immediate corrective action as appropriate.
  • Ability to understand and enforce the Exposure Control Plan as this position risks occupational exposure to blood borne patho­gens and other infectious material as an essential function of the job.
  • Ability to safeguard the privacy of Residents’ health information.
  • Ability to speak and read English, and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, residents, and staff.
  • Ability to use desktop or laptop computers; the ability to use the designated facility computer system (or systems) at a proficient level.
  • Ability to perform other related duties as directed by administration.
  • Must attend staff meetings, in-service classes, and committee meetings as assigned or required.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, stoop, stretch, crawl, crouch, kneel, balance, finger, grasp, push, pull, reach, or walk.
  • Ability to lift objects from a lower to higher posi­tion or moving objects along a horizontal level but from position to position. This includes lifting and carrying weights in the 35 to 50 pound range.
  • Ability to exert force upon an object in order to draw, drag or tug objects toward the source of the force in a sustained motion.
  • Ability to drive and maintain a van, or other designated vehicle used to transport residents to and from activities, medical appointments and community events as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Motivate residents to participate in the life of the community by assessing their activity interests and encouraging them to get involved; use a variety of instructional materials, activities, and approaches appropriate to the needs of individual residents.
  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive activities program which includes opportunities according to residents’ specific interests; offer community cultural, arts, and recreational choices; program and schedule for activities that meet multi-levels of care needs for residents; and implement programs that promote positive behavior and learning for residents, staff, families, and volunteers.
  • Conduct Assisted Living resident assessments.
  • Create various communication pieces to keep residents abreast of weekly and monthly activities (includes Independent Living and Assisted Living Itineraries, promotional flyers, and sign-up sheets).
  • Schedule and facilitate the meeting of the Resident’s Council at least once a month; attend the meeting as well as be responsible for documentation of the meeting (typing up notes in the absence of a council secretary and distributing).
  • Conduct orientation for volunteers; log annual volunteer time records and recognize volunteer contributions.
  • With the guidance of the Activity Program Director, liaise with various groups that can enhance the program (local library and schools, senior services groups, volunteers).
  • Purchase and maintain materials to implement activity programs; organize, set-up, and take down props or other decorations.
  • Support the individual needs of residents upon request to offer reassurance and/or satisfaction; assist residents in developing appropriate communication skills at their level of ability; assist residents in the development of thinking skills through programs designed to stimulate mental activity.
  • Develop and monitor plans of improvement for residents who are isolated or withdrawn by visiting with them one-on-one.
  • Responsible for recognizing signs of emotional/physical distress in residents and taking appropriate action as necessary to promote their health and well-being; be cognitive of the need to change communication style adapting it for hearing, visual, or cognitively impaired residents.
  • Participate in and instruct professional development programs with residents, staff, and others.
  • Responsible for the safety of residents under his/her supervision during activities.
  • Be available for all calls and report life altering events or significant changes related to residents to the Activity Program Director and/or any other department head directly involved in the needed intervention(s); fill out incidents reports as needed or requested.
  • Contact residents with reminder calls about activities, events, and general items; provide assistance to residents to get to and from activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, in‑service classes, and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Operate computers programmed with software needed to record, store, and analyze resident information; operate copy/fax/printer machines to send documents and produce documents.
  • Assist with driving residents to unscheduled and scheduled activities and medical runs and on an individual basis as needed in absence of the driver.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the Activity Program Director.
