About The Position

As the Activity Assistant at Nazareth House-San Diego, you’ll be the driving force behind creating and delivering engaging daily activities that bring joy, connection, and purpose to our residents' lives. Your role is central to fostering a vibrant and supportive community, meeting residents’ physical, cognitive, and social needs through dynamic group and individual programs. With personal interaction at the core, you’ll build meaningful connections, adapt to evolving needs, and collaborate with staff to make every day impactful for those we serve.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field.
  • Previous experience in long-term care or assisted living settings.
  • Specialized experience in developing and facilitating activities for residents with dementia.
  • Training in behavior management or strategies for engaging residents with cognitive impairments.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations, including Title 22 and infection control practices.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic techniques such as art therapy, music therapy, and reminiscence therapy.
  • Proficiency in using technology to create activity calendars, flyers, and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to adapt activities for residents with varying levels of ability.
  • Patience and empathy to work with individuals who may have challenging behaviors.
  • Creativity and flexibility to design engaging, meaningful activities that accommodate diverse needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining residents’ dignity, privacy, and independence.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and multitasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent (preferred.)

Responsibilities

  • Encourage residents to participate in group and individual activities, providing personalized support to promote inclusion and engagement.
  • Organize special events, celebrations, and resident council meetings to foster a sense of community and enhance residents' overall well-being.
  • Collaborate with care teams, families, and external partners to ensure activities align with residents' wellness goals and introduce meaningful programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements to create a secure and supportive environment for residents.
  • Adapt and refine activities to meet residents’ evolving needs, promoting physical, cognitive, and emotional wellness.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve activity offerings to maintain a vibrant, enriching program that enhances quality of life.
