The position involves providing medical care to adolescents in the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).   • Provides medical care to Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) adolescents.
  • Takes relevant patient history.
  • Identifies patient needs and makes diagnoses.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans using diagnostic data.
  • Performs complete well-care examinations including physical examinations.
  • Performs complete gynecological histories and physical examinations as indicated.
  • Writes prescriptions and informs patients about medications prescribed.
  • Completes medical forms and documentation related to patient care.
  • Makes and tracks all referrals to other agencies and providers, with follow-up care provided.
  • Assists with phlebotomy as needed to ensure smooth patient flow.
  • Administers immunizations as needed.
  • Distributes medications to patients.
  • Reviews and signs all pertinent laboratory results and makes appropriate treatment decisions based on these data.
  • Completes Court Orders and all other DJJ mandated paperwork.
  • Evaluates and treats DJJ employees on an emergent basis.
  • Administers Hepatitis B vaccines to employees based on protocol.
  • Encourages health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance.
  • Provides health education on various topics including preventive medicine and counseling on chronic diseases.
  • Provides patient advocacy, as appropriate for the site.
  • May provide in-service training for The Floating Hospital’s professional and administrative staff.
  • Works in a supervisory role with mid-levels and collaboratively with specialists for consultation and referral purposes.
  • Participates in Peer Review process.
  • Provides technical assistance and teaches nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and/or Physician Assistants.
  • Maintains ultimate responsibility for directing the course of the patient’s medical treatment.
  • Participates in case-conference and case management activities.
  • Participates in the 'On-Call' list, on a rotation basis.
  • Be immediately available in person or by telephone to provide further guidance when the mid-level performs any task or function, as needed.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Reviews and signs charts of mid-level providers.
  • Assures that the mid-level practitioner(s) provides specified services or clinical activities in accordance with accepted medical standards.
  • Meets with designated mid-level(s) on a regular basis to discuss recommendations and collaborate towards delivering quality health care.
  • Immediately notify the Chief Medical Officer of any changes in professional arrangements with mid-levels.
  • Observes, implements, and promotes federal regulations as defined by HIPAA.
  • Acts as on-site supervisor of agency staff when in the field.
  • Makes suggestions to Site Supervisors and Medical Director to improve patient care.
  • Assists in teaching medical assistants about patient care and triage.
  • Participates in case conferences discussing patient care.
  • May initiate and participate in research related to health care or allied fields.
  • Medical Degree from an accredited institution.
  • New York State Medical license.
  • New York State Medical Board Certification.
  • Minimum of two years’ clinical experience preferable.
  • Ability to speak Spanish or other languages preferable.
