About The Position

The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) APP Fellowship is a 12-month, full-time training program designed for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants seeking advanced experience in trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. Based at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital—a 737-bed academic medical center and the region’s only Level I Trauma Center—this fellowship provides immersive, hands-on clinical training in a high-acuity environment. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Eligible for Virginia licensure
  • Strong interest in acute care, trauma, or surgical critical care
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Program or Accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required.
  • DEA licensure required.
  • Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competency of core skills, related to assigned area, that serves as a basis for continued growth and progression of skills and pace.
  • Demonstrates good written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer literacy required for automated computer systems and programs such as electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform histories, physical exams, and clinical assessments
  • Diagnose and manage acute, trauma, and surgical conditions
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Develop and implement treatment plans
  • Perform bedside procedures (e.g., I&D, chest tubes, central lines)
  • Assist in surgical care and patient management
  • Provide patient and family education
  • Document care in electronic medical records
  • Coordinate care, referrals, and discharge planning
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams
