The Penn State University Press seeks a bright, energetic intern to assist our acquisitions department. The candidate will provide support for three editorial assistants and five editors as they guide manuscripts through the acquisitions process, including in-house review, revision, peer review, and final acceptance or rejection. Responsibilities may include vetting proposals, updating databases, preparing manuscripts for production, conducting market research, assisting with the distribution of gratis copies, and attending meetings, as well as basic filing, scanning, and data input. This is a demanding but exciting job at a scholarly press with a wide range of publications in history, art history, rhetoric and communication studies, graphic studies, interdisciplinary literary studies, religious studies, Latin American history and culture, and regional topics. The successful candidate will be efficient, detail-oriented, and able to navigate overlapping deadlines and function independently. Candidates should also have a strong interest in publishing as a career, but do not need to be English majors or students at Penn State University. Excellent oral and written communication skills and good organizational abilities are essential. Interns must possess the ability to interact effectively with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This internship is excellent training for any career path in publishing. Penn State University Press interns have gone on to work with such publishers as Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, Houghton-Mifflin, Macmillan, MIT Press, NYU Press, Oxford University Press, Princeton University Press, O'Reilly & Associates, University of California Press, Thames & Hudson, the American Society for Cancer Research, Highlights, and other institutions such as libraries, museums, and communications companies. The position is for an onsite intern for Summer 2025. All internship candidates must be available to commit to the full term of the Internship. This is a paid position. We ask that interns commit to working approximately 10-15 hours per week within the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
