About The Position

Liquid Robotics is seeking an Acoustics Engineer to join our small but highly-motivated team. In this role, you will be responsible for the development of persistent sensing solutions to complex acoustic sensing problems and will work with cross functional teams to deliver world-changing products. This position will be responsible for designing, implementing, and testing acoustic sensing solutions, as enabled by the Wave Glider USV. This position is based in Herndon, Virginia, although strong candidates will be considered for a hybrid work arrangement with regular travel required.

Requirements

  • Ability to think analytically
  • Strong technical skills in most of the following: acoustics, RADAR and/or SONAR signal processing, algorithm development, detection and estimation theory, wave propagation, and data analysis
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • In depth knowledge of the marine environment as related to acoustic sensing
  • Detailed understanding of passive SONAR principles and their application in dynamic ocean environments (i.e., shallow-depth, towed arrays)
  • BS in a relevant science or engineering field. Advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • 9+ years of direct experience developing passive acoustic sensing solutions.
  • Experience with acoustic analysis software
  • Experience conducting acoustic propagation modelling
  • Experience in the design and specification of acoustic arrays, with towed arrays being preferred
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • U.S. Person status required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering team (systems, hardware, and software) to develop an acoustic sensing design that meets customer needs
  • Perform PCB design and updates, testing, data collection, and analysis
  • Develop analog electronics, including hydrophone selection
  • Serve as lead system analyst in the design, collection and verification of bench and at-sea data gathering events for acoustic solutions
  • Design and baseline system test plans and lead their implementation and execution in the field
  • Participate in concept and design reviews
  • Develop and test algorithms associated with hydro-acoustic mission objectives
  • Support the development and delivery of solution-specific training to customers
  • Prepare reports on sensing effectiveness and system performance, including data analysis, data interpretation, results obtained, and recommendations on next steps
  • Work with manufacturing team to successfully release designs into production
