About The Position

The Acme Gridley Screw Machine Setup Technician – Technical Lead is a senior-level machining role responsible for advanced setup, optimization, and technical ownership of Acme-style multi-spindle machines. In addition to hands-on setup and troubleshooting, this role serves as a technical resource for operators, supports quoting and cost estimating activities, and drives process consistency and continuous improvement across assigned machines and product families.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience setting up Acme or similar multi-spindle screw machines
  • Proven experience troubleshooting complex machining and process issues
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including GD&T interpretation
  • Advanced knowledge of cutting tools, materials, feeds, speeds, and machine capability
  • Experience with precision measurement and inspection techniques
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a technical lead, process engineer, or senior setup role
  • Experience supporting manufacturing quoting or cost estimating
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and routing standards
  • Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience
  • Experience supporting new product launches or customer PPAPs

Responsibilities

  • Perform complete setups and changeovers on Acme multi-spindle machines, including tooling selection, cam timing, feeds, speeds, and optimization
  • Act as the technical lead for assigned machines or product families, ensuring stable, repeatable processes
  • Coach, train and lead other operators in producing quality products and efficiencies.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex machining, tooling, and material issues that impact quality or throughput
  • Establish and maintain setup standards, tooling lists, and best practices
  • Support and mentor setup technicians and machine operators, providing technical guidance and training as needed
  • Collaborate with maintenance on machine capability, repairs, and preventive maintenance planning
  • Job layout, set up and machine operation
  • Interpret complex blueprints, customer specifications, and GD&T requirements
  • Help define inspection methods, control plans, and critical-to-quality characteristics
  • Lead first-article approvals and support internal and customer audits
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for quality or scrap issues
  • Support quoting activities by reviewing part prints, tolerances, materials, and process requirements
  • Develop process routings, estimated cycle times, tooling requirements, and labor content for new quotes
  • Provide technical input on machine selection, feasibility, and capacity for new or revised work
  • Identify cost drivers and opportunities to reduce cycle time, tooling cost, or scrap during the quoting phase
  • Support launch activities by validating quoted assumptions during first production runs
  • Lead or support kaizen and continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, delivery, and cost
  • Optimize machine utilization, changeover times, and tooling life
  • Support standard work development and documentation
