About The Position

The City of San Bernardino's Finance Department is seeking Accounting Technicians I, II, and III to assist in various accounting functions. This role involves preparing, verifying, and maintaining accounting transactions and records, processing payments, and supporting payroll operations. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of experience in financial, budget, and accounting operations for Accounting Technician I and II; two (2) years for Accounting Technician III.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft 365 products.
  • Basic knowledge of common finance practices and accounting operations.
  • Valid California driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • College-level coursework in bookkeeping or accounting from an accredited college or university (for Accounting Technician III).
  • Experience in a municipal agency.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation, verification, and maintenance of City accounting transactions and records.
  • Prepare and process requests for payment, journal vouchers, and billing advices.
  • Calculate out-of-state sales taxes and provide information to accounting staff for required action.
  • Maintain and update spreadsheets for cash receipts, purchasing, and other accounting transactions.
  • Receive payments from the public for various purposes and issue receipts according to City procedures.
  • Account for, order, and batch departmental payroll timesheets; follow up on missing timesheets.
  • Prepare summaries and reports of salary expenditures, savings, and overtime costs.
  • Calculate step increases and retroactive pay for promotions and adjust anniversary dates in the payroll system.
  • Support daily auditing of cash receipts and payments; balance ledgers and prepare deposits.
  • Type and prepare travel requests and perform other administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate with operating departments to ensure completion of required contracts and development of bid specifications.
  • Respond to general inquiries and requests for forms at a public counter.
