About The Position

The Accounting Manager oversees the daily operations of the property accounting function for BPM across Commercial, Market Rate, and LIHTC properties. This role ensures an accurate and timely monthly close process for all asset types while preparing and reviewing financial statements across multiple accounting systems. The Accounting Manager supervises the property accounting team, partners closely with the BPM Controller to ensure accurate recording of company transactions, and ensures timely preparation of financial reporting packets for owners and leadership. The position also maintains and strengthens internal controls to ensure compliance with all policies and procedures across the entire portfolio.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of real estate, property management, or corporate accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and related accounting principles.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel or database/warehouse management proficiency.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office/Teams, AppFolio, RealPage, DocuSign, Adobe, NetSuite, etc.
  • Strong ability to prepare and review complex financial statements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with sound judgment and timely decision-making.
  • Creative, flexible, and innovative mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly financial statements for complex properties and review financials prepared by accounting team members.
  • Distribute financial packages to Asset Management and respond to follow-up inquiries.
  • Review commercial leases and management agreements to ensure accurate system setup (management fees, support fees, CAMs).
  • Reconcile bank accounts and ensure clearing of stale reconciling items.
  • Oversee management fee calculations, allocations, and billing.
  • Monitor cash flows, distributions, and contribution requests and ensure all critical payments are made on time.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and confirm accurate input into accounting systems.
  • Supervise and mentor property accounting team members.
  • Provide performance feedback and support professional growth.
  • Train and onboard new accounting team members.
  • Build strong working relationships across teams and promote effective communication.
  • Oversee accuracy of day-to-day journal entries (AP, AR, cash disbursements, billing, collections, payroll, fixed assets, and general/entity accounting).
  • Review annual CAM reconciliations for commercial managed properties.
  • Coordinate with internal departments (Operations, Asset Management) to ensure accounting reflects accurate and updated information.
  • Evaluate and enhance existing accounting policies, procedures, and workflows to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
