About The Position

The Accounting Manager reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the Zufall Health Center, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with federal and state regulations, and strong internal controls. This role manages the general ledger, supervises accounting staff, supports budgeting and audits, and partners with leadership to maintain the financial integrity of the organization.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting
  • Working knowledge of FQHC financial requirements, grants, and cost reporting
  • Experience with accounting systems and healthcare billing systems
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Supervisory experience required

  • CPA or Master’s degree preferred
  • Prior healthcare and/or FQHC experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supervises accounting staff (e.g., Staff Accountants, AP/AR, Payroll, or Grants Accounting, as applicable)
  • Provides coaching, performance feedback, and training
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process
  • Ensure accurate and timely posting of journal entries
  • Review and reconcile general ledger accounts, including cash, AR, AP, payroll, and accruals
  • Maintain the chart of accounts in alignment with FQHC reporting needs
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational accounting policies
  • Prepare and review internal financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow)
  • Analyze variances against budget and prior periods; explain results to leadership
  • Support preparation of board-ready financial reports
  • Assist CFO with financial forecasting and projections
  • Oversee accounting for federal, state, and local grants, including Section 330 funding
  • Ensure proper tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Support grant budgeting, drawdowns, and financial reporting
  • Assist with HRSA compliance requirements and financial components of UDS reporting
  • Support preparation of annual FQHC cost reports (Medicare/Medicaid)
  • Oversee reconciliation between billing system and general ledger
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and support resolution of discrepancies
  • Ensure proper accounting for sliding fee scale discounts, write-offs, and adjustments
  • Coordinate with billing and operations teams to ensure accurate revenue recognition
  • Review accounts payable processes and ensure timely vendor payments
  • Oversee payroll accounting, benefit accruals, and related reconciliations
  • Monitor cash flow and support cash management activities
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and segregation of duties
  • Assist in annual budget development and ongoing monitoring
  • Prepare schedules and documentation for external auditors
  • Serve as a key point of contact during financial, grant, and program audits
  • Implement audit recommendations and strengthen internal controls
  • Develop, document, and maintain accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and regulatory requirements
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and implement efficiencies
  • Support system upgrades and accounting-related software improvements
  • Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff
  • Foster a collaborative relationship with clinical, operations, HR, and billing teams
  • Provide financial guidance and support to non-finance leaders
  • Participate in cross-functional projects as assigned
