WHO WE ARE: Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is the largest manufacturer, lessor and maintainer of railcars in North America, with roots dating back more than 125 years to Standard Oil Company and John D. Rockefeller. UTLX, along with its Canadian affiliate Procor, owns and leases a diversified portfolio of approximately 120,000 tank cars and operates a tank car manufacturing facility as well as a network of repair facilities across North America. The Company’s regulatory, engineering, and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and related services for many of its customers. Owned by Marmon Holdings/Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX headquarters is in Chicago’s financial district, close to major public transportation hubs. This Summer internship is hybrid in our Chicago office with a requirement to be in-office 2-4 days/week for the duration of the Summer program (approximately late May – mid-August). JOB DESCRIPTION: The Accounting Intern will support and work closely with Manager of Accounting and senior accountants. The Accounting Intern will report to the Manager of Accounting. This is a terrific opportunity to work on various key projects and get exposure within the rail industry.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelors degree in Accounting and/or Finance.
  • Have taken 100-200 level accounting courses.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior bookkeeping and journal entry experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of budget templates (SG&A budget, pulling actuals, heavy exposure to general ledger chart of accounts, income statement and balance sheet)
  • Financial statement tie-outs
  • Ad hoc variance analysis and finance projects
