About The Position

The Accounting Associate will perform essential bookkeeping, accounts receivable, and cashiering functions within the Business Operations division of a public community college in Iowa. This role supports the Controller and the Vice President of Administrative Services, ensuring compliance with legal and reporting requirements. The position is full-time with a focus on promoting a positive image for the college district.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and minimum of 2 years of experience in related field required.
  • Competency with computer software applications specifically Microsoft Office programs and QuickBooks; ability to learn and develop competency in SCC's administrative software (Ellucian).
  • Proven ability to manage and organize a computer-based data system for processing, storing, and retrieving records.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical, evaluative, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Well-developed abilities with prioritization, time-management, sound judgment, timely follow-up, and follow-through.
  • Superior customer-service skills including patience, compassion, humility, and a positive attitude.
  • Honesty, strong work ethic, character, and personal integrity with a commitment to professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Processes journal entries and fund transfers; reconciles bank statements and accounts receivables on a monthly basis.
  • Monitors cash flow requirements and investments.
  • Performs receipt of student and other miscellaneous payments via various platforms.
  • Assists students with payment of accounts and payment plans; monitors delinquent accounts.
  • Assists with updating SCC credit tuition and refund billing tables annually.
  • Processes dorm deposit refunds.
  • Provides documentation and serves on the Special Appeals Committee.
  • Initiates state and federal payroll tax transfers.
  • Reviews un-cashed checks to ensure compliance with 240 day rule for un-cashed Federal Funds, prepares annual report of un-cashed checks for SCC Board and State of Iowa Treasure Hunt.
  • Performs bookkeeping duties for third party entities where SCC is a fiscal agent, including preparing checks and keeping accurate records of all financial transactions.
  • Maintains general ledgers and reconciles accounts and bank statements monthly.
  • Prepares audit information and works with external audit team(s).
  • Records, balances, and prepares cash flows for Iowa New Jobs Training (INJT) program accounts monthly and for annual audit.
  • Knows and complies with institutional, state, and federal governmental fund accounting, auditing, and reporting requirements.
  • Learns, applies, and role-models all SCC policies and procedures, including strategic goals and expectations of accountability within the Business Office.
  • Embraces and supports constructive change; works efficiently and effectively to improve Business Office services, processes, and related college operations.
  • Contributes towards building a positive team working environment within the Business Office and across the institution; treats others with respect and compassion as a representative of SCC.
  • Applies ethical standards to work situations; makes work decisions in accordance with SCC's values and goals; shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences and promotes a harassment-free environment.
  • Provides exemplary customer service and establishes a welcoming and trusting environment for all visitors and employees of the Business Office.
  • Creates or modifies processes, policies, and procedures as required due to changes in federal, state, or institutional regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
