About The Position

The Accounting Assistant position involves performing a variety of financial, accounting, and office support duties within the Finance - Revenue & Recovery department. The role includes specialized financial support, customer service at the front counter, and maintaining accurate financial records. The assistant will handle inquiries, process payments, audit accounts, and ensure compliance with city policies while providing excellent customer service.

Requirements

  • Two years of responsible experience involving bookkeeping, accounting, or financial experience.
  • Training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Accounts payable experience in a governmental agency is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of financial, accounting, and auditing office support duties.
  • Provide specialized financial, accounting, or statistical office support in a centralized accounting setting.
  • Process payments and answer inquiries regarding City services and associated fees and taxes.
  • Assist in resolving customer complaints.
  • Maintain accounting, financial, and statistical records.
  • Audit accounts receivable and issue receipts.
  • Track various forms in different stages of processing and file appropriate forms.
  • Maintain quality control of data collected and the integrity of cash and checks collected.
  • Perform cashiering functions and balance daily cash and checks received to receipts.
  • Review and reconcile bank statements and related reports.
  • Research and assemble information for forms or reports preparation.
  • Post and balance journal and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Process warrants, encumbrances, and claims.
  • Provide information to the public or City staff requiring judgment and interpretation of policies and procedures.
  • Ensure proper authorization and compliance with City policies and procedures.
  • Enter and retrieve data from computer systems and produce reports.
  • Classify data according to prescribed accounting systems.
  • Perform general administrative office support duties such as typing, proofreading, and filing.
