The Accountant for Sponsored Projects Accounting at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) is responsible for managing accounting functions to ensure accurate and efficient post-award financial administration. This role involves analyzing contracts, providing oversight throughout project life cycles, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The position also serves as the primary contact during financial audits and assists in developing fiscal policies to minimize risk.

  • Manage accounting functions within the Sponsored Projects Accounting Office.
  • Analyze contracts and agreements for financial obligations.
  • Interpret and apply regulations and guidelines to ensure compliance.
  • Provide institute-level accounting oversight throughout project life cycles.
  • Prepare financial reports and invoices for external sponsors.
  • Collect funds owed to the university under awards promptly.
  • Serve as the primary contact during financial audits of sponsored project accounts.
  • Work with university personnel and external agencies to resolve financial compliance issues.
  • Perform account closeout and produce final financial, inventory, patent, and equipment reports for sponsors.
  • Analyze charges with UTIA administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure costs are allowable and within project budgets.
  • Provide guidance and informal training to faculty and staff.
  • Develop fiscal policies and procedures to minimize university risk.
  • Provide financial information and reports to UTIA administrators and budget directors.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
  • Three or more years of work experience in accounting or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Effective communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Accounting and finance management skills.
  • Master's degree with one or more years of work experience in sponsored projects accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Work experience in post-award financial management of extramural funding.
  • Experience with federal cost accounting principles at a higher education institution.
  • Knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance requirements.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar integrated information systems.
  • Advanced spreadsheet and data management skills.
  • Remote work flexibility with limited overnight travel required for meetings and audits.
