About The Position

Mutual Housing California is seeking a detail‑oriented Property Accountant to support the financial health of our affordable housing communities. This role is ideal for someone with foundational accounting experience who’s ready to take ownership of a portfolio of 10–15 properties—with strong training, structure, and support from an experienced accounting team. You’ll handle full‑cycle property accounting, monthly close, financial reporting, and fixed asset accounting while collaborating closely with Property Operations, Asset Management, and the broader accounting team. Requirements

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s in accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (preferred, not required).
  • Coursework, internships, volunteer experience, or transferable skills welcome.
  • Experience with accounting systems or financial software is a plus.
  • Strong Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, reconciliations).
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles and month‑end close.
  • Ability to manage deadlines across multiple properties.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Clear communication and willingness to ask questions.
  • Alignment with Mutual Housing California’s mission and values.
  • Must pass criminal background screening, including education verification and DMV check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with accounting systems or financial software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full‑cycle property accounting and monthly close.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and GAAP‑compliant financial statements.
  • Review general ledger activity and automated payments (utilities, services, debt service).
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules, capitalization, and depreciation.
  • Prepare reconciliations, schedules, and variance analyses in Excel.
  • Support audits and maintain organized, auditable workpapers.
  • Collaborate with Property Operations, Asset Management, and accounting teams.
  • Participate in onboarding, training, and ongoing development.
