About The Position

Performs moderately complex accounting work. Work involves assisting in the preparation of financial statements, records, documents, and reports. Works under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE). Major course work in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred. Each year of experience as described below in excess of the required three years may be substituted for thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three years full-time, wage-earning accounting, bookkeeping, or financial experience.
  • Three years full-time, wage-earning computer operations experience.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes.
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill in the use of computers and related equipment in a stand-alone or local area network environment.
  • Skill in problem-solving techniques.
  • Skill to prepare and maintain complex records and files in an automated system.
  • Skill to perform complex accounting transactions.
  • Skill to review technical data and prepare technical reports.
  • Skill to interpret and apply accounting theory.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45 lbs. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
  • Conditions include working inside, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, working protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, dolly, and automobile.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares financial statements, technical reports, schedules, and exhibits; prepares and processes general journal entries, payment, cash, purchase, travel, and related vouchers; reviews accounting records, expenditures, funds, appropriations, expenses, and revenue collection records; and ensures agency assets are accounted for properly.
  • Audits accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies and procedures and state and federal statutes; researches and reconciles discrepancies in accounts, bank statements, and appropriation balances; and reports findings.
  • Prepares periodic analyses of fund balances and expenditures; reconciles and updates various accounting transactions to include point-of-sale systems and commissary sales and inventory; and classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial and accounting documents and records.
  • Maintains adequate records of expenditures, funds, appropriations, and expenses to include revenue collected and deposited; compiles and performs data entry; and orders credit cards for commissary managers and administrative personnel.
  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
