About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Controller, Accountant I is responsible for, but not limited to, maintaining the day-to-day accounting functions, accruals, financial statement preparation, and performing general accounting functions, as required. It will also perform internal audits to ensure programs follow policies, laws, and regulations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of financial accounting principles, balance sheets, income statements, financial administration, and reporting. Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Knowledgeable in fund accounting and government accounting procedures.
  • Knowledgeable in Cost Principles, Uniform Guidance, and CFR’s applicable to Tribal Governments.
  • Ability to work and interact with departments throughout the organization.
  • Ability to research and compile information and use complex spreadsheets to support management in making sound decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to community issues and concerns.
  • Skill in use of Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skills in preparation of project timelines and reporting deadlines.
  • Skill and ability in writing informative, accurate and comprehensive reports, newsletter articles, and other forms of written communications.
  • Skill in budget preparation and administration.
  • Bachelor's in accounting or finance or a combination of education and experience in a closely related field.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license, transportation and insurance are required.
  • Must pass background security check prior to employment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug test as requested over course of employment.
  • Must be able to work evening hours and weekends on occasion.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of budgets and budget projections.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and required financial reports.
  • Assist with the annual financial audit.
  • Assist with payroll.
  • Provide up-to-date expenditure and balanced information.
  • Review accounting transactions, verify budget and expenditures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal controls.
  • Respond to accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
  • Prepare various month-end and year-end accounting functions.
  • Prepare general ledger entries for adjusting and correcting accounting records.
  • Perform general bookkeeping duties including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and purchasing.
  • Perform audit to ensure programs are following policies, laws, and regulations.
