About The Position

Brown Missionary Baptist Church is seeking a detail-oriented and trustworthy Accountant/Bookkeeper with knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to oversee the church’s financial recordkeeping and reporting. This position plays a vital role in ensuring financial integrity, transparency, and accountability in support of the church’s mission and ministry. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (recent graduates encouraged to apply)
  • Working knowledge of GAAP
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and ethical standards
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or entry-level accounting experience
  • Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, ACS, Shelby, or similar church/nonprofit systems)
  • Experience in nonprofit or church accounting

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts in accordance with GAAP
  • Record all financial transactions accurately and timely
  • Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Maintain supporting documentation for all receipts and expenditures
  • Ensure strong internal controls are in place
  • Manage designated and restricted funds in accordance with nonprofit/church accounting standards
  • Record and reconcile tithes, offerings, online giving, and special contributions
  • Maintain donor records and prepare annual contribution statements
  • Ensure proper tracking of ministry-specific budgets and accounts
  • Process vendor invoices and payments in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate records of payables and receivables
  • Monitor outstanding balances and follow up as needed
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for church leadership and Finance Committee
  • Assist in preparing annual operating budgets
  • Provide financial reports for board meetings and congregational meetings
  • Support annual audit or financial review process
  • Assist with payroll processing and payroll tax filings
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations
  • Maintain confidentiality of payroll and donor information
