About The Position

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for an Accountant. This position is responsible for ensuring accounting treatment is recorded in accordance with GAAP, maintain accurate and reliable financial statements, and establish and maintain internal controls. Conducts financial monitoring to ensure cost efficiency and compliance within the Department’s accounting, budgeting and fiscal bureaus. Assists with maintaining the database of MDT assets. This position ensures state compliance with complex federal regulations and establishes goals, objectives and priorities for all accounting functions. Provides technical assistance to division/district financial contacts, budget analysts, and project management to ensure consistent application of policies and procedures. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field, OR 4 years of related accounting experience.
  • 1 year of related accounting experience.
  • Alternative combinations of related experience or education may be considered. Such as an associate’s degree in accounting and 3 years of related accounting experience; OR 5 years of related accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ability to use an advanced and functional knowledge of the financial reporting structure and related accounting systems for assigned program(s).
  • High proficiency in utilizing Excel to complete work.
  • The successful candidate must pass a name-based background investigation as a condition of employment.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States must be provided if selected for hire.
