About The Position

Knott Laboratory is seeking an early‑career Vehicle Accident Reconstructionist to join our growing Phoenix team. This role is ideal for a recent mechanical engineering graduate or someone with 0–3 years of experience in accident reconstruction, vehicle testing, automotive systems, or related engineering fields. You’ll conduct vehicle inspections, collect and analyze crash data, assist with accident reconstructions, and prepare clear technical documentation. Hands‑on curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are essential. Training and mentorship are provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 0–3 years of experience in mechanical engineering, automotive systems, or accident reconstruction.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in vehicle systems.
  • Ability to conduct detailed inspections and fieldwork, frequently in outdoor conditions.
  • Active drivers license and ability to perform on-site inspections throughout the Phoenix area.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vehicle inspections, crash documentation, or hands‑on mechanical work.
  • E.I.T. (Engineer in Training) Certification
  • Experience performing EDR downloads.
  • Drone piloting experience or FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Exposure to vehicle dynamics, automotive diagnostics, or forensic engineering.
  • Strong technical writing skills—especially report drafting.
  • Familiarity with accident reconstruction tools (e.g., FARO, LEICA, PC Crash, photogrammetry) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vehicle inspections, damage assessments, and scene documentation.
  • Download and interpret Event Data Recorder (EDR) information.
  • Assist in analyzing vehicle dynamics, collision forces, and accident causation.
  • Capture aerial data using drones (for candidates with drone experience or Part 107 certification, opportunity to obtain drone pilot certification is available)
  • Operate measurement tools such as Leica and Faro scanners, and other instrumentation.
  • Support reconstruction of vehicle accidents using mechanical engineering principles.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on calculations, simulations, and reporting.
  • Conduct research on vehicle systems, crash behavior, and applicable standards.
  • Prepare clear, concise technical notes and draft sections of reports.
  • Organize findings, photographs, diagrams, and inspection data.
  • Maintain detailed project documentation and evidence handling logs.
  • Work cross‑functionally with accident reconstructionists, mechanical engineers, and project managers.
  • Participate in internal technical reviews.
  • Support client meetings, presentations, and case strategy as needed.
