About The Position

The Access Control III will be proficient in all aspects of the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electronic access control and alarm intrusion systems. Uses a high level of skill to perform a variety of tasks involved with installing, analyzing and repairing all types of access control systems, including all computers, camera, keys, electronic locks, security systems, and centralized clock systems. Working in a service-oriented environment, the Access Control Tech III will successfully communicate with members of the Dartmouth community while carrying out their tasks.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalency.
  • Technical school graduate, relevant associate's degree, or have equivalent education and experience.
  • Ten years of relevant experience of which four must have been served as an apprentice or equivalent position.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Expert in all aspects of networked/automated electronic systems including knowledge of processor-based communication and alarm systems and software.
  • Expert in the knowledge of applicable codes, specifically NFPA 101, Life Safety Code; NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors; International Building Code IBC; American Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Working knowledge of College Construction Guidelines.
  • Expert in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical locking systems.
  • Expert in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic lock systems and access control systems.
  • Must have skill in the use of hand and power tools, analog/digital test equipment, man lifts, testing devices and ladders.
  • Ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • Be able to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Computer skills on laptop, tablet and/or smartphone including word processing, spreadsheets and skilled with Microsoft Office software.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Must possess advanced computer skills related to troubleshooting and programming access control systems.
  • Strong customer service orientation.

Responsibilities

  • Expert in performing regular testing and maintenance of access control and alarm intrusion systems including assessment and troubleshooting of components and systems.
  • Expert in installing new or modifying existing door hardware, including locks, as needed.
  • Expert in installing new locks and door hardware on interior and exterior doors, file cabinets, and equipment casings as needed and as part of new construction and remodeling projects.
  • Expert in troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, and maintaining existing door hardware, electronic or mechanical, including door closers, ADA operators, and disassembling locks and replacing worn parts using the appropriate techniques.
  • Bypasses ('pick') locks as required using industry standards.
  • Cuts and issues new keys to authorized personnel.
  • Installs, pins, maintains, and repairs mechanical and electrified locks.
  • For security purposes, rekeys locks and changes locker combinations.
  • Plans and installs key systems in accordance with the Access Control Shop's practices for master key systems and maintains accurate and up-to-date records of all keys, locks, and other security devices.
  • Maintains record keeping for inventory of hardware supplies and tools; assists in preparing purchase requisitions as necessary.
  • Plans work details and follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on all equipment and systems.
  • Follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on equipment and systems to assist in the troubleshooting, installation, maintenance and repair process of electronic equipment.
  • Installs and/or works closely with outside contractors for cabling and hardware installations.
  • Ensures the workmanship from outside contractors meets college standards.
  • Determines work methods to accomplish assignments such as repairs, replacements or new installations.
  • Reviews drawings, plans, and specifications, and recommends appropriate security devices throughout the campus.
  • Meets with Project Managers to coordinate the installation of newly designed systems.
  • Works closely with ITC and their vendors to identify and support new security systems and enhancements.
  • Coordinates installation with the Department of Safety & Security (DOSS), departments, and various maintenance and operations trades personnel.
  • Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of access control and security systems to diagnose cause of malfunction.
  • Tests electronic and mechanical components and performs system testing and analysis in order to locate defects.
  • Performs systems programming and integration of access controls and security systems with burglar alarm, fire alarm and camera systems.
  • Maintains records of system installations, repairs, calibrations, and tests.
  • Coordinates with Network Services for correct cable management, labeling, and IP addresses.
  • Obtains IP addresses for all networked cameras.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with constituents.
  • Must possess access control manufacturer's training (e.g. Lenel, CBORD) and continue trainings as they become available.
