About The Position

The Access Control Technician II will be proficient in all aspects of the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical locking systems and electronic access control systems. Performs a variety of tasks involved with installing, analyzing and repairing all types of access control and security systems, including all computers, camera, keys, electronic locks, security system components, and centralized clock systems. Working in a service-oriented environment, Access Control Tech II will successfully communicate with members of the Dartmouth community while carrying out their tasks.

Requirements

High School plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Technical school graduate, relevant associate's degree, or have equivalent education and experience.
Five years of relevant experience, two of which must have been served as an apprentice or equivalent position.
Must have a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical locking systems.
Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic lock systems and access control systems.
Proficient in the knowledge of applicable codes, specifically NFPA 101, Life Safety Code; NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors; International Building Code IBC; American Disabilities Act (ADA).
Working knowledge of College Construction Guidelines.
Must have skill in the use of hand and power tools, analog/digital test equipment, man lifts, testing devices and ladders.
Ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
Be able to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
Computer skills on laptop, tablet and smartphone, and with Microsoft Office software.
Willingness to work overtime as required.
Strong attention to detail.
Able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Strong customer service orientation.

Responsibilities

Performs regular testing and maintenance of access control and alarm intrusion systems including assessment and troubleshooting of components and systems.
Installs new or modifies existing door hardware, including locks, as needed.
Installs new locks and door hardware on interior and exterior doors, files cabinets, and equipment casings as needed and as part of new construction and remodeling projects. This includes determining the appropriate keying required to meet the end users' needs.
Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces, and maintains existing door hardware, electronic or mechanical, including door closers, ADA operators, and disassembling locks and replacing worn parts using the appropriate techniques as required to ensure proper function of the door.
Bypass ("pick") locks as required using industry standards.
Cuts and issues new keys to authorized personnel.
Installs, pins, maintains, and repairs mechanical and electrified locks.
For security purposes, rekeys locks and changes locker combinations.
Plans and installs key systems in accordance with the Access Control Shop's practices for master key systems and maintains accurate and up-to-date records of all keys, locks, and other security devices.
Maintains record keeping for inventory of hardware supplies and tools; assists in preparing purchase requisitions as necessary.
Plans work details and follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on all equipment and systems as defined above.
Follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on equipment and systems to assist in the troubleshooting, installation, maintenance and repair process of electronic equipment.
Installs and/or works closely with outside contractors for cabling and hardware installations.
Determines work methods to accomplish assignments such as repairs, replacements or new installations.
Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of access control systems to diagnose cause of malfunction.
Tests electronic and mechanical components and performs system testing and analysis in order to locate defects.
Performs systems programming and integration of access controls with burglar alarm, fire alarm and camera systems.
Maintains records of system installations, repairs, calibrations, and tests.
Coordinates with Network Services for correct cable management, labeling, and IP addresses.
Maintains effective working relationships with constituents.
Must complete manufacturer's training (e.g. Lenel, CBORD) with a passing grade within 120 days of hire and continue trainings as they become available.
Learns from senior technicians via working with and understanding procedures
Develops skills by observing and assisting peers and senior technicians in performing response, problem diagnosis and repair
Reviews drawings, plans, and specifications, and recommends appropriate security devices throughout the campus.
Meet with Project Managers to coordinate the installation of newly designed systems.
Works closely with ITC and their vendors to identify and support new security systems and enhancements.
Coordinates installation with the Department of Safety & Security (DOSS), departments, and various maintenance and operations trades personnel.
Works with and mentors Access Control Technician I explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions. When qualified, allows the tech to perform the work under supervision.
