About The Position

The Access Control Specialist is responsible for controlling, monitoring, and authorizing personnel access to nuclear and high-security facilities in strict accordance with site security procedures, access authorization requirements, and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations. The position ensures that only properly authorized individuals are granted access to controlled areas and that all escorted personnel comply with established safety, security, and conduct requirements.

Requirements

  • Level 3: High school diploma or equivalent with at least three (3) years of related experience.
  • Level 4: High school diploma or equivalent with at least seven (7) years of related experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required site access authorization and security clearance.
  • Ability to pass background checks, drug screening, and fitness-for-duty requirements.
  • Intermediate computer proficiency for access control and recordkeeping systems.
  • Intermediate knowledge of access authorization, badging, and escorting requirements for nuclear or high- hazard facilities.
  • Intermediate knowledge of DOE security, safety, and conduct-of-operations principles.
  • Skill in verifying credentials and authorizations, with attention to detail.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate logs, records, and documentation.
  • Ability to enforce security procedures consistently and professionally.
  • Ability to maintain continuous control of escorted personnel in controlled environments.
  • Ability to recognize and report security or safety concerns promptly.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with employees, visitors, subcontractors, and security personnel.
  • Advanced knowledge of access authorization, badging, and escorting requirements for nuclear or high- hazard facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of DOE security, safety, and conduct-of-operations principles.

  • Maintains required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including stopping work if job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Must have current Q level Department of Energy security clearance.
  • This position will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working at DOE, nuclear, D&D, or other high-security industrial sites.
  • Experience with access control systems, badging systems, or security operations.
  • Familiarity with radiological, industrial safety, or hazardous work environments.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies personnel identity, access authorization status, training completion, and badging credentials prior to granting site access.
  • Enforces access authorization requirements in accordance with DOE orders, site security plans, and applicable federal regulations.
  • Denies or revokes access when authorization requirements are not met and promptly report discrepancies or violations.
  • Provides required escorted access for visitors, subcontractors, vendors, and non-authorized (N3B/LANL) personnel within controlled, limited, or security-sensitive areas.
  • Maintains continuous line-of-sight, sound and positive control of escorted personnel at all times.
  • Ensures escorted individuals adhere to all safety, radiological, security, and conduct requirements while on site.
  • Terminates escort activities immediately if safety or security conditions are compromised.
  • Documents access activities, escort logs, visitor records, and access authorization verifications.
  • Maintains records in compliance with DOE requirements, site procedures, and audit standards.
  • Supports internal and external audits, inspections, and security reviews as required.
  • Immediately reports security incidents, suspicious activity, or access violations in accordance with established reporting protocols.
  • Complies with all site safety, radiological control, and security training requirements.
  • Maintains situational awareness within controlled areas and promptly respond to abnormal conditions or security concerns.
  • Coordinates with Los Alamos National Lab Emergency Management, security management, and operations personnel to ensure safe and secure site operations.
  • Performs other duties as required.
