About The Position

The Office of Access & Opportunity: Disability Resources ( ODR ) provides leadership to the University’s efforts to foster a welcoming and accessible environment. The office promotes opportunity, access and civil rights based on disability in educational, programming, and employment settings and promotes an environment of respect and access for all members of the University community. ODR provides leadership through campus collaborations and intentional partnerships to cultivate an accessible living, learning, and working environment, resulting in full access for people with disabilities at Appalachian State University. The Access Consultant reports directly to the Assistant Director of Disability Resources and is responsible for supporting the mission of the Office of Access and Opportunity: Disability Resources through:

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of progressive experience working directly with individuals with disabilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge, training or experience interpreting federal and state laws regarding disability rights
  • Demonstrated knowledge of determining eligibility for disability-related accommodations
  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Counselor Education, Special Education, Psychological or Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs or related discipline

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a disability resource office at an institution of higher education
  • Direct experience reviewing documentation and determining eligibility for disability-related accommodations
  • Masters Degree in human services field such as Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or related field
  • Familiarity with various neuropsychological, psycho-educational and psychological assessment batteries used in the diagnosis of learning disabilities, Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder ( ADHD ) and traumatic brain injuries

Responsibilities

  • Coordination of the interactive process and evaluation of requests for and coordination of, accommodations, approved academic adjustments, workplace accommodations, auxiliary aids & services
  • Review of student requests for accommodations and evaluating disability documentation, determining eligibility of academic adjustments, accommodations, and access needs
  • Development of office guidelines and procedures
  • Education and outreach for the Office of Access and Opportunity: Disability Resources ( ODR ) by coordinating outreach and initiatives for training with constituent groups and the campus community regarding disability-related topics
  • Distribution of information to the university community related to the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ) and Section 504 Rehabilitation Act, disability issues, including, but not limited to being evaluated, the provision of reasonable accommodations, on-campus resources and off-campus agency support
  • Consultation with faculty and staff regarding accessibility and the implementation of accommodations/academic adjustments
  • Promotion of access to university programs and activities
