Position Summary The Acceptable Knowledge Expert (AKE) will support the Contact‑Handled (CH) Transuranic (TRU) Waste Program at the Idaho National Laboratory by performing duties associated with Process Knowledge (PK) and Acceptable Knowledge (AK). This role involves collecting, analyzing, validating, and documenting historical and process data to ensure waste qualification and regulatory compliance in support of waste treatment, shipment, and disposal activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, science, engineering, mathematics, or a related technical discipline
  • Minimum of four (4) years of applicable experience supporting acceptable knowledge, process knowledge, waste characterization, or technical documentation efforts
  • Demonstrated experience extracting, analyzing, and managing complex technical data sets
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word for technical documentation and report generation
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data tracking and analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proven ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
  • Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and clearance requirements, U.S. citizenship is required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting CH TRU waste programs
  • Familiarity with WIPP regulatory frameworks and DOE waste management programs
  • Prior experience supporting audits or regulatory reviews

Responsibilities

  • Collect, summarize, and document information regarding generating facilities, processes, physical and chemical characteristics, and regulatory requirements for transuranic waste
  • Extract and analyze data from multiple production, historical, and document databases
  • Utilize historical records to prepare technical reports and AK documentation
  • Evaluate waste container information to qualify containers for specific waste streams and treatment pathways
  • Interpret WIPP requirements, including Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) and Waste Acceptance Permit (WAP)
  • Apply environmental regulations such as RCRA and TSCA to ensure compliant waste management decisions
  • Initiate and resolve Nonconformance Reports and Acceptable Knowledge issues
  • Provide support to operations personnel to ensure compliance with site and WIPP AK requirements
  • Support annual WIPP audits and regulatory reviews
  • Interface with internal IEC organizations (e.g., Document Services, IT) and external DOE organizations
  • Assist with training and qualification of other Acceptable Knowledge Experts
  • Support department requests in a timely and efficient manner
