About The Position

A specialized Academic Support Lab (ASL) instructional aide position that provides individual and/or group tutoring in content specific area (Bilingual/Writing) along with the carrying out the additional responsibility of assisting students in successfully accessing and utilizing learning commons (library) resources.

Requirements

  • Education Associate's degree required; Bachelor's or Master's degree preferred
  • Experience Minimum of two years working in higher education preferable at the Community College level. Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience working in direct academic student support.
  • Interpersonal Skills Ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators, staff and external constituencies.
  • Technical Skills Working knowledge of current learning management systems and emerging computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Other Skills Ability to work with diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff. Training and experience working with students and providing good customer service. Competency in the utilization of computer technology used for communication, testing, and the entering, storing, retrieving, and reporting of data related to students. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a special emphasis on public speaking.

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject-specific (Bilingual/Writing) expertise through individual and/or group tutoring sessions and keep current in regard to the curriculum used for content area assigned
  • Provide assistance to students in the methods of proper academic research, citation techniques, and use of Learning Commons (Library) resources needed for student success
  • Work in coordination with the Learning Commons (Library) staff to support student research literacy and expand digital resource catalogs.
  • Use active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of tutoring
  • Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
  • Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
  • Maintains records on interactions with each student
  • Collaboratively identify ways to increase student engagement and improve student success
  • Communicate with instructors to stay informed about curricula, areas of difficulty with particular students, etc.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skill and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
  • Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed
  • Adhere to FERPA and other relevant federal and state regulations
