About The Position

The Academic Skills Specialist at the College of Applied Health Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is responsible for providing academic support, resources, and career coaching to undergraduate students. This role focuses on enhancing student success through individualized academic planning, career exploration, and the development of essential academic skills. The specialist will work closely with students from their freshman year through to graduation, facilitating workshops, advising, and collaborating with faculty and staff to improve retention and academic performance.

Requirements

• Master's degree in counseling, higher education administration, or education.
• Educational training and experience in counseling or higher education.

• Demonstrated direct experience with academic advising and coaching in a higher education setting.
• Ability to work across cultures with non-traditional students.
• Knowledge of student management tools such as Undergraduate Records, Banner, and Canvas.

Responsibilities

• Meet regularly with students to develop academic success plans and portfolios.
• Coach and counsel approximately 100 AHS freshman, sophomores, and transfer students.
• Aid students in career exploration, graduate school searches, and volunteer and research opportunities.
• Serve as the co-instructor for the I-LEAP AHS 199: Orientation course.
• Assist in recruitment of new students through admissions events and workshops.
• Develop and coordinate workshops on transitional and campus life issues.
• Participate in summer registration and fall orientation activities.
• Promote the development of academic study skills among I-LEAP students.
• Assist with the coordination of retention strategies and persistence efforts.
• Plan and co-facilitate annual spring break trips and other special programming.
