About The Position

The Academic Medical Dosimetrist (AMD) at Northwestern Medicine plays a crucial role in the radiation oncology department, reflecting the mission, vision, and values of the organization. This position adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, ensuring compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards. Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Dosimetry and the Director of Medical Physics & Dosimetry, the AMD is responsible for providing accurate and meaningful treatment plans for radiation oncology patients based on the prescriptions from Radiation Oncologists. The AMD is expected to bring creative ideas for treatment planning options and innovative techniques to optimize treatment plans tailored to the needs of patients. This role requires close coordination with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Nursing, and Therapists to ensure proper patient care. Additionally, the AMD is responsible for coordinating and providing learning opportunities for trainees and residents, participating in clinical trials, and contributing to the educational mission of the department. The AMD supports treatment planning and dosimetry across various radiation treatment modalities, including 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, SBRT, IORT, LDR, HDR brachytherapy, Gamma knife, MR-Linac, and any future technologies that may be adopted. The AMD's responsibilities include understanding and addressing imaging artifacts, contouring normal structures, and utilizing imaging parameters for treatment planning. Expertise in treatment planning software, particularly Pinnacle, is essential, along with a solid understanding of dose calculation algorithms and accuracy in Monitor Unit (MU) calculations. The AMD communicates effectively with the radiation oncology team regarding treatment plan implementation and provides support to therapists in various imaging parameters. Active participation in clinical and didactic teaching, clinical research, and serving as a resource for clinical trials are also key components of this role.
