About The Position

The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) is a non-profit, multi-service organization focusing primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. They operate at community centers located in the neighborhoods of East Harlem and Yorkville and seek to deliver programs that are impactful, innovative, and intergenerational. The organization is seeking an experienced, goal-oriented, energetic, and results-focused professional to provide focused academic instruction to adults 18 years old and up who are enrolled in GED Prep classes and instructional support to young adults engaged in High School Equivalency and college readiness classes. The ideal candidate is someone who can effectively engage with people from diverse backgrounds and learning abilities, will create and maintain positive working relationships with program participants, and must be a self-starter committed to the mission, values, and beliefs of the Isaacs Center and the Education Workforce Development Department.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field with relevant experience
  • Minimum 2 years of successful instruction/facilitation
  • Demonstrated successful engagement with an at-risk population
  • Experience with curriculum development, with a specific focus on thematic units of study
  • Superior organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) the current GED Exam
  • Expertise in Common Core-aligned instruction

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic education in a creative and stimulating fashion for adults and out-of-school youth while creating a nurturing and supportive environment
  • Establishes and embraces an environment that respects individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Teach, develop, and help prepare students to master the Mathematical subtest
  • Prepare and facilitate lessons and instructional activities daily based on student interests, ability, proficiency, and other factors in the class
  • Plan classwork and homework assignments to support students’ understanding of course objectives and basic skills for literacy
  • Develop weekly class assessments to measure each student’s mastery level of benchmark skills and determine progress in the class
  • Maintain an orderly classroom during instruction and other times by establishing procedures for students and expectations for behavior
  • Research, evaluate, and assess adult literacy issues appropriate to adult literacy programs
  • Possesses strong time management & communication skills
  • Maintains student confidentiality regarding their educational, social, and emotional challenges
  • Utilize positive youth development strategies to resolve behavioral challenges and celebrate youth achievement
  • Possesses a basic understanding of Microsoft Office suite
  • Submit reports as required including monthly reports to supervisor
  • Maintain and input associated program data, such as attendance, case notes, grades, etc.
  • Participate in pre-program and ongoing professional development opportunities and daily staff meetings in addition to formal feedback and coaching
  • Implement all health and safety protocols as required
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by manager and leadership
