About The Position

The Energy Engineering Research Specialist at the Smart Energy Design Assistance Center (SEDAC) is responsible for conducting energy and sustainability research, performing fieldwork related to energy efficiency and net-zero energy, and creating educational materials. This role aims to educate clients about best practices in energy and sustainability, supporting SEDAC's mission to reduce the energy footprint of Illinois. The position is based in Champaign, Illinois, with options for hybrid or remote work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, or related field.
  • Experience conducting spreadsheet-based energy analysis, calculations, modeling, or related experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, or closely related field.
  • 1 - 3 years of professional experience in energy engineering research or a related field.
  • Certified Energy Manager certification.
  • Experience with Energy Conservation Codes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical energy and sustainability analysis, including baselining energy variables and estimating potential greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
  • Conduct site visits at project locations to support technical analyses.
  • Produce research materials such as literature reviews, manuscripts, and reports.
  • Research efficient technologies and sustainability practices for educational materials.
  • Promote awareness of SEDAC programs through workshops, webinars, and conferences.
  • Develop SEDAC's client base through networking and direct client contact.
  • Create outreach materials for presentations and digital media.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of workshops and discussion groups.
  • Track and report specific program activities and follow up with clients regarding project implementation.
  • Assist students and new staff with project analysis and research.
