About The Position

The Academic Division Head at Clarkson University is the lead academic and administrative officer of the division. The Head oversees curriculum delivery, faculty performance, and student engagement to ensure high-quality programs and services, provides feedback to support faculty development, and promotes continuous improvement in student learning outcomes. The Division Head works collaboratively with other university leaders to advance divisional and institutional goals and priorities. General Purpose: The Academic Division Head provides academic and administrative leadership, ensuring excellence in teaching, research, and service in alignment with the mission and strategic goals of the university. The Head fosters a collegial and inclusive environment that supports faculty, staff, and student success and represents the division within the university and to external constituencies. The Division Head works collaboratively across the university, supporting cross-disciplinary efforts between their division and others.

Requirements

Terminal degree (Ph.D., or other discipline-appropriate doctorate) from an accredited institution.
The rank of Associate Professor or higher.
Minimum of 5 years of academic experience with progressive leadership responsibilities.
Record of successful teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher, including research and publication.
Demonstrated success in curriculum development and academic management.
Proven ability to foster an inclusive academic environment that supports faculty and student populations.
Demonstrated ability to provide academic or administrative leadership within a university or comparable setting.
Excellent Leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate faculty and staff.
Strong understanding of academic program development.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proactive problem-solving skills, able to navigate complex challenges and drive positive change.
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff.
Excellent organizational abilities to manage the academic tasks of the division efficiently and effectively.
Knowledge in strategic planning and budgeting to ensure the division's resources are used effectively.

Responsibilities

Provide academic and administrative leadership that advances the division’s mission, programs, and reputation.
Develop and implement divisional goals in alignment with the university’s strategic priorities.
Represent the division in meetings, committees, and external activities.
Foster a collegial, inclusive, and collaborative culture.
Support data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.
Work with the other Division Heads and the Academic Dean to create consistent policies and procedures across divisions.
Serve as a collaborative liaison between the division and other units of the institution.
Ensure divisional compliance with the University, and New York State rules and regulations.
Oversee the preparation of in-depth self-study reports, coordinating the collection of survey data, faculty reports, and student results.
Oversee curriculum design, development, revisions, and assessment to ensure academic quality and relevance.
Coordinate course scheduling and faculty assignments to meet student and program needs.
Ensure compliance with university academic policies and accreditation standards and encourage participation amongst division members, ensuring widespread involvement.
Support the development of innovative teaching methods and learning experiences.
Initiate periodic program reviews to introduce academic programs and projects and sunset existing programs and projects when appropriate.
One course per semester teaching load.
Manage division’s fiscal operations; budgets, expenditures, and resource allocations responsibly.
Oversee facilities, equipment, and instructional resources within assigned purview.
Collaborate with other academic areas and administrative offices to support institutional initiatives.
Manage course schedules in collaboration with the faculty and the Registrar that serve program and student needs.
Collaborate with Marketing and the Office of Information Technology on the maintenance of divisional print and electronic records, including websites.
Recruit, supervise, and evaluate faculty and staff, in accordance with university policies, including hiring recommendations, performance evaluations, and professional development oversight.
Support faculty and staff development, mentoring, and performance improvement.
Promote a respectful and inclusive work environment that values diversity and collaboration.
Review and address faculty and staff grievances and personnel matters promptly, fairly, and, professionally.
Foster a supportive and engaging learning environment that enhances student success.
Address student concerns, grievances, and academic appeals in collaboration with appropriate university offices.
Promote student research, experiential learning, and professional development opportunities.
Support student recruitment and retention and coordinate academic advising, including degree progress and transfer credit evaluation as needed.
Maintain active involvement in teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with faculty expectations.
Model professional conduct and academic integrity.
Encourage faculty collaboration in research, interdisciplinary initiatives, and community engagement.
Support faculty in achieving excellence in teaching, research, and service.
