About The Position

Under the supervision of the Workforce Coordinator, the Academic Counselor will assist students in setting educational and career goals, exploring alternatives, and support decisions regarding their academic pathways. Services include individual and group counseling, advisement, GED classes, workshops, reference materials, referrals to resources on or off MNC, and the use of testing tools. The incumbent will teach basic skills to students with varying academic levels while integrating GED skills, reading and math skills, social justice and community issues, and culture. The Academic Counselor gives additional, and/or clarifying, and/or supplemental information to students and performs tasks that support student learning and program curriculum. The Academic Counselor must possess the ability to work with students from different cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Education, Human Services, Social Work, Psychology or related field or with related experience teaching GED curriculum.
  • Required 1+ years experience working with young adults typically 17-24 years old.
  • Proficient in math through Algebra II.
  • Strong background in High School Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.
  • Available between Tuesday-Saturday from 8:30am-5:00pm.
  • Available to work with students 2-4 hours/week outside of class for check-in.
  • 100% in person working.
  • Current CA Drivers License, current auto insurance and a clean driving record.
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certificate (every 2 years thereafter)
  • Current Immunizations (TB) (every 2 years thereafter)
  • Clearance Child Abuse Index
  • Bilingual English, Spanish
  • Independent thinker, possess excellent customer service skills, professional attitude, a high level of personal integrity, maturity, and business judgment required.

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with client information.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit approximately 80% of the time, walk 10% of the time and stand 10% of the time.
  • The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to type or handle, feel, and operate objects.
  • The employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal counseling, career development, and assessment for current and prospective MNC Educational Services students, individually or in groups.
  • Provide instruction to students individually and/or in a small group setting with their academic needs and GED testing in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science in a primarily Spanish setting under the direction of the Workforce Coordinator.
  • Foster a stimulating environment that encourages student participation, interpersonal skill development and reinforces critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Help maintain a classroom environment that is conductive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Conduct student educational assessments of participants and work with students to create learning plans that meet their needs.
  • Offer academic advising regarding possible career and educational pathways as well as the Colleges occupational and vocational programs and those preparing students to graduate and transfer.
  • Register students for testing.
  • Create and maintain confidential student files including student registration, assessments, educational plans, class attendance, test scores, GED Exam completion records, etc.
  • Monitor students progress and program progress towards performance outcomes.
  • Enter program data into online reporting system and prepare monthly narrative program reports.
  • Continue to encourage students to continue their advancement by providing assistance in pursuing higher education or vocation training programs after graduation.
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals and serve as liaison to assure connections with support services that are consistent with students needs.
  • Gather and analyze data to identify barriers to graduation and factors affecting academic performance.
  • Participate in outreach efforts to recruit students and develop retention plans for participants.
  • Establish and maintain relationships and effective communication with community agencies, governmental/health organizations, educational institutions, and local civic/business organizations; serve as the department liaison.
  • Coordinate and organize the submission of timely daily, weekly, and monthly reports with the Program Manager; ensure deadlines are met.
  • Actively engaged in Program Departments Strategy team meetings and curriculum/program development process facilitated by the Workforce Coordinator.
  • Supporting other MNC Service Programs and Education services as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
