About the position

The Coaches at Herron Preparatory Academy (HPA) provide instructional leadership for assigned academic disciplines and report directly to the Head of School. This role involves leading curriculum development and modification efforts to ensure alignment with HPA’s classical, liberal arts mission and compliance with IDOE standards. Coaches are responsible for coordinating with teachers regarding High Ability requirements, ensuring that curriculum reflects current best practices, and maintaining alignment across all academic and grade levels. They will also oversee lesson plans, mastery assessments, and classroom practices to enhance student learning and success in high-stakes testing. Additionally, Coaches will develop systems to monitor student mastery, analyze teacher tracking systems, and ensure consistency in gradebooks and digital classroom sites. Collaboration with the Vice President of Academics and Head of School is essential for evaluating teacher effectiveness and providing instructional support. Coaches will also assist in recruiting and onboarding new teachers, planning professional development, and managing departmental relationships with students, parents, and faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Lead curriculum development and modification efforts for specific academic disciplines.
  • Ensure curriculum aligns with HPA’s classical, liberal arts mission and IDOE standards.
  • Coordinate with teachers regarding High Ability requirements and programming.
  • Align curriculum across all academic and grade levels.
  • Ensure lesson plans are aligned with HPA’s classical model and subject goals.
  • Construct mastery assessments to measure the learning process.
  • Monitor and enhance student mastery through effective systems.
  • Analyze trends in grades and assignments in teachers' gradebooks.
  • Ensure consistency in digital classroom sites for teachers.
  • Evaluate teacher effectiveness and provide instructional support and coaching.
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring new teachers.
  • Lead onboarding process for new teachers.
  • Plan and deliver professional development for teachers and staff.
  • Facilitate teacher meetings and family support nights for assigned subjects.
  • Maintain inventories and coordinate the purchase of textbooks and supplies.
  • Manage departmental relationships and inform the Executive Leadership Team of emerging issues.

Requirements

  • 5 to 10 years teaching experience required, preferably in a culturally diverse school.
  • Experience leading groups and working in teams to achieve academic success.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred.
