Johns Hopkins University's Advanced Academic Programs (AAP), seated within the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS), is seeking an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor works closely with a caseload of graduate students, assisting them holistically with academic planning, course registration, academic strategies, selecting programs and concentrations, and developing post-graduation plans. This role is essential in troubleshooting academic problems, monitoring academic progress and standing, and advising on policies and procedures. The standard working hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, occasional evenings and weekends are required to accommodate special events. The Academic Advisor will help students navigate their academic experience by providing proactive academic planning, creative problem-solving, and connections to academic resources. This position requires working with students holistically to help them meet their personal and academic goals while finding solutions for personal, social, financial, and academic challenges. The advisor will assist students with course registration, academic strategies, selecting programs and concentrations, and developing post-graduation plans. Tracking student progress is crucial, which involves generating reports, examining student data, and connecting with students about registration, grades, and graduation to support their success and retention. In addition, the advisor will manage early warning flags by providing outreach to students and communicating with faculty. They will troubleshoot registration problems and refer students to support services to facilitate their success. Advising students on academic opportunities, requirements, policies, and procedures is a key responsibility. The advisor will also provide early interventions for "high priority" students identified by faculty each academic term and may meet with students on academic probation to conduct self-assessments and develop academic success plans. Monitoring students' academic progress and communicating the process and deadlines for graduation processing are also part of the role. The advisor will create and maintain accurate academic records through degree audit software and the student information system (SIS), documenting student meetings and notes in the student information database. The role also involves programming, projects, and collaboration, including conducting group advising sessions, advising workshops, and co-sponsoring events with faculty and other support offices. The advisor will work closely with key campus partners such as the Registrar, Life Design, Financial Aid, and Student Affairs to ensure effective connections between advisees and campus resources. Participation in advisory and campus-wide working groups and committees is expected, along with working on projects to continually improve academic advising services and the training and development of academic advisors. The advisor will assist with planning and implementing departmental programs, orientations, and events as needed.
