The Academic Advisor in the Office of First and Second Year Advising at Loyola University Chicago plays a crucial role in providing holistic academic advising to a caseload of first- and second-year undergraduate students. This position is designed to support students in their academic journey, helping them with major discernment, course selection, and understanding the requirements for their chosen areas of concentration. The advisor will address a wide range of academic and developmental issues to ensure student success and timely progress toward graduation. In this role, the Academic Advisor will assist students in developing meaningful academic and co-curricular plans that align with the Jesuit tradition. This includes teaching several sections of the first-year seminar and presenting academic workshops on various topics such as registration, campus resources, software usage, degree requirements, and effective learning strategies. The advisor will provide guidance through various communication methods, including in-person meetings, phone calls, emails, and video conferencing, accommodating both scheduled and drop-in appointments. Maintaining accurate records using various software is essential, as is the development of advising resources that promote student success and retention. The advisor will communicate degree requirements and academic policies, including FERPA, to students, parents, and faculty. Additionally, the advisor will assist incoming first-year and transfer students during orientation programming and provide support to students facing academic challenges or on academic probation, referring them to appropriate campus resources as needed. The role also involves preparing student files for a seamless transition to College and School advisors at the conclusion of the students' sophomore year. The advisor may work with special student populations, such as Honors students, international students, and ESL students, and will participate in various Student Academic Services programs and events.
