The Academic Advisor at Tacoma Community College (TCC) plays a crucial role in supporting students through academic advising, career planning, and retention services. This position is designed to help students navigate their educational journey, ensuring they remain enrolled and achieve their academic goals. The advisor will work under the direction of the Director of Academic Advising within the College's advising center, providing assistance to all student populations. This includes guiding students in program exploration and selection, course selection, and monitoring their progress towards fulfilling academic requirements. The advisor will also create individualized graduation plans and assist students with class registration, ensuring they have a successful start to their academic journey. In addition to academic advising, the Academic Advisor will provide essential information regarding tuition, fees, financial aid, and appropriate academic course placement. They will help students identify their academic interests and objectives, aiding them in developing long-range academic and career plans. The advisor will employ proactive advising strategies, including mandatory and intrusive advising for both new and enrolled students, to ensure they are well-informed about academic and technical programs, admission procedures, degree requirements, and transfer requirements. The role also involves reviewing previous college transcripts, recommending transfer equivalencies, and making appropriate course and schedule recommendations. The advisor will maintain knowledge of academic program requirements to support students who are undecided in choosing a program of study. They will monitor student progress in collaboration with faculty advisors, assess degree and graduation audit checklists, and notify students of any discrepancies that may need to be addressed. Furthermore, the advisor will resolve academic early alerts from faculty, providing targeted support such as tutoring and access to disability accommodations. They will also refer students to campus and community resources for emergency funding, childcare services, mental health counseling, and assistance with basic needs. The Academic Advisor will contribute to the overall operations of the advising department, including departmental goal setting and evaluating program effectiveness. They will maintain open communication with faculty, colleagues, and administrators, demonstrating the importance of professional advising in student success. The advisor will practice relational advising to build trust and a sense of belonging among students, particularly supporting special populations such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), first-generation students, low-income individuals, undocumented students, and foster youth.
