About The Position

We are in the heart of Chicago, across the street from historic Grant Park, and housed in some of the most iconic buildings in the South Loop. Columbia College Chicago, a private urban institution of over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students, is currently searching for an ACADEMIC ADVISOR. We are hiring for three positions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • At least 2 years of work experience in advising students or other related experience required.
  • Relevant professional knowledge of advising techniques and procedures used in higher education and student development theory.
  • Understanding of undergraduate education and undergraduate planning and implementation.
  • Effective analytical skills to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate information.
  • Ability to assist students develop effective academic plans and career and life goals to promote student retention and academic success.
  • Ability to work with others to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Skill to use or ability to quickly learn online registration and advising systems.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Self-motivated with a keen attention to detail.
  • Service-oriented, diplomatic, and able to present ideas in user-friendly language.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic student support to assist students with academic options and requirements, transitional issues, and baseline career preparation.
  • Responsible for the advising of students via scheduled appointments, walk-in advising hours, group advising sessions, and phone/email support.
  • Monitor student academic progress and overall completion of degree requirements for a caseload of students.
  • Monitor registration and course schedules for assigned caseload and provide outreach to targeted students as needed.
  • Assist with the evaluation of student academic records and the process to provide exceptions, alternatives, substitutions, and academic waivers.
  • Deliver academic advising presentations at new student orientation and facilitate the new student registration process.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with faculty and staff in assigned academic school.
  • Attend and participate in school curriculum committee meetings to represent student matriculation and navigation concerns.
  • Assist in the development of advising tools with primary emphasis with multi-year plans and articulated pathways to degrees.
  • Develop and deliver programming sessions for the academic department, such as group advising, new student orientation, and open house sessions.
  • Assist with general walk-in / phone assistance to support centralized advising resource.
  • Participate in cross-training and professional development opportunities.
  • Attend and contribute during staff and team meetings.
  • Perform other related duties and/or responsibilities as assigned or required.
