About The Position

The Academic Advisor at the University of North Texas is responsible for advising master's level graduate students on their degree and program requirements. This role supports academic departments, leads student-focused initiatives, and contributes to the overall success of the College of Information. The advisor will engage with students to ensure they understand university policies and procedures, while also maintaining effective communication and relationships with diverse populations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with UNT Systems, like EIS- Peoplesoft, EAB - Navigate, u.Achieve, Salesforce, Perceptive Content.
  • Knowledge of UNT and the College of Information and its policies.
  • Experience advising graduate students and working with international populations.

Responsibilities

  • Advises students on degree, program, graduate school, and university requirements, policies, and procedures in appointments and through email communication.
  • Reviews and approves the processing of student course requests.
  • Completes administrative tasks including signing forms, approving students for graduation, and reviewing internship applications.
  • Works with department faculty, staff, and administrators on academic policy issues and student concerns, providing information on academic catalog, graduate school policies, and university requirements.
  • Maintains advising records from appointments and email communications with students.
  • Assists with graduate commencement and represents the department in events.
  • Assists with the training and supervision of student assistants on special projects, enrollment procedures, and student/program questions.
  • Partners with and/or refers students to other university resources to resolve conflicts or provide enhanced student services.
