The Academic Advisor at George Mason University plays a crucial role in providing undergraduate academic advising and supporting student outreach and retention within the Schar School of Policy and Government. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about guiding students through their academic journeys and helping them achieve their educational and career goals. The advisor will engage with students both in-person and virtually, offering counsel on degree progress, graduation requirements, and academic procedures. They will educate students about important university deadlines, policies, and procedures, ensuring that students are well-informed and prepared to navigate their academic paths. In addition to advising, the Academic Advisor will initiate outreach to students to assist them in their academic planning. This proactive approach includes supporting students holistically by exploring their academic interests and career aspirations. The advisor will help students initiate necessary academic actions and maintain detailed appointment records and advising notes, all while upholding confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws. The role also involves participation in new student orientation advising sessions and programs, where the advisor will represent the Schar School at various orientation events. They will serve on committees and projects as assigned, contributing to the overall mission of the school. Monitoring academic progress is another key responsibility, as the advisor will identify students at risk and develop tailored action plans to support their continued enrollment. This includes performing direct outreach to at-risk students and providing specialized one-on-one advising. Collaboration with the Schar School engagement team is essential to advance retention goals through Learning Communities and other co-curricular programming. The advisor will also make appropriate referrals to university support units such as success coaching, counseling services, writing center, and financial aid, ensuring that students receive comprehensive support throughout their academic experience.
