About The Position

Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) is a unique and vibrant learning institution. It is a non-profit, regionally accredited college offering associate, bachelor’s, and master's degrees, with state-of-the-art campus in the Hub district of the South Bronx. For over 60 years, MCNY has offered highly motivated learners a powerful model of Purpose-Centered Education that promotes personal transformation and constructive change in workplaces and communities. MCNY enrolls approximately 1,000 students annually into its accelerated degree programs with convenient onsite and remote schedules for added flexibility. The Academic Advisor is part of the Student Success team, working under the supervision of the Director of Student Success to create, implement, and promote a wide variety of activities and programs focusing on the needs of all students. The Academic Advisor will be assigned a case load of students, while working collaboratively with other advisors to support students. MCNY enrolls daytime, evening, and Saturday students. As part of the team, the Academic Advisor will be required to work some late evenings, occasional Saturdays.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of experience working in higher education, advising students from diverse backgrounds; experience with retention programs/initiatives preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within the team and across various departments.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to work with students and colleagues tactfully and effectively.
  • Demonstration of initiative and passion for student success.
  • Sound judgment, problem solving, and critical thinking skills are essential
  • Familiarity with educational technology and information systems (experience with Power Campus and Early Alert Systems preferred).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and will be required to learn various internal student information and learning management systems.
  • Must have strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task.
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends, as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, educational leadership, psychology, or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advisement for students in various academic programs.
  • Track the progress of their assigned students, and link them to the necessary resources for support.
  • Partner with designated Directors to identify trends and issues in the programs and proactively develop strategies to address student concerns
  • Work with the Director of Student Success to develop strategic initiatives to improve overall retention. The target groups for initiatives are: Transfer students, Readmit Students, and Pathways to Careers students.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of New Student Orientation and other student engagement programming.
  • Collect and interpret data to support the assessment of institutional retention initiatives, including the tracking of persistence of assigned students.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director
