Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Stay current on academic advising best practices, institutional policies, and curriculum updates through professional development.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in academic advising, student services, student success programs, or related roles in higher education
  • Experience working with special populations such as first-generation students, transfer students, or underrepresented groups
  • Familiarity with advising tools such as Workday, Slate, or similar systems
  • Knowledge of academic advising models and best practices
  • Experience planning and delivering workshops
  • Familiarity with Fort Lewis College curriculum, culture, and student services
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and group advising sessions to assist students with academic plans, degree requirements, class registration, program exploration, and career preparation.
  • Support students in establishing academic, career, and personal goals while aligning them with appropriate majors, minors, certificates, and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Maintain an assigned caseload of students and build relationships through regular contact to support academic and personal success.
  • Guide students through academic challenges by identifying barriers, implementing improvement plans, and connecting to appropriate campus resources.
  • Provide accurate information on institutional policies, curriculum requirements, and academic procedures.
  • Provide advising and individualized support to help incoming first‑year students create and adjust their initial class schedules, and assist transfer students in developing course plans aligned with their goals and transfer credits.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records using advising technologies such as Workday and Slate.
  • Actively engage in outreach efforts to connect with students in the advising caseload and identify those who may benefit from additional support.
  • Assist with new student orientation programs by providing advising services and supporting transition efforts.
  • Connect students to academic support services, faculty mentors, research/internship opportunities, and co-curricular experiences.
  • Work closely with academic faculty and departments to ensure advising practices align with departmental goals and curriculum updates.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records using advising technologies such as Workday and Slate.
  • This work will include meeting advising performance expectations, including metrics and goals that will be developed to measure effectiveness and student success outcomes.
  • Manage time effectively to meet outreach, caseload, and documentation responsibilities.
  • Stay current on academic advising best practices, institutional policies, and curriculum updates through professional development.
  • Work across multiple technology platforms to assist students in their academic journey.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, and work effectively with broadly diverse communities.
  • Attend meetings, complete reports, contribute to team initiatives, and perform other duties as assigned.
