About The Position

The Academic Advisor at Wayland Baptist University provides essential support to students in navigating their degree plans and program requirements. This role involves personal assistance, communication with various stakeholders, and administrative tasks to ensure students receive the guidance they need to succeed academically. The advisor will work closely with military and civilian students, helping them with course registration, degree planning, and career advice while representing the university positively to external parties.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • At least 2 years of work experience, preferably 1 year in a related field.
  • Understanding of principles, methods, and procedures in career counseling and guidance.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including grammar and composition rules.
  • Self-confidence and skills in marketing and sales of WBU programs.
  • Computer competency and willingness to learn proprietary programs.
  • Ability to listen and match student needs to services offered.
  • Ability to handle time-sensitive pressures related to class enrollments and deadlines.
  • Problem-solving skills and proactive approach to issues.
  • Experience and skills in communication and teamwork.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with American Military personnel.
  • Familiarity with academic advising processes and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal assistance to military and civilian students regarding degree programs.
  • Assist students in person, via phone, or email to register and/or drop courses.
  • Build degree plans from students' former and acceptable college transcripts.
  • Advise students on educational issues, program selection, and career planning.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as email management, electronic imaging/filing, and composing degree plans.
  • Interpret available services to community groups, faculty, and staff members.
  • Interface with faculty at classroom site locations.
  • Operate with minimal supervision.
