About The Position

The Academic Advisor at Virginia Tech will support a diverse undergraduate student population, particularly within the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures. This role involves assisting students in their academic journey, focusing on recruitment, retention, and graduation, while promoting an inclusive environment for historically underrepresented groups. The position is hybrid, requiring both on-campus and remote work, with some evening and weekend commitments.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in education, student development, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field; or a bachelor's degree with equivalent training and work experience.
  • Experience in applying academic policies and problem-solving in a student-focused environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience supporting historically underrepresented, underserved, and/or minoritized groups.
  • Understanding of FERPA guidelines and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of academic disciplines within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
  • Academic advising experience in higher education.
  • Experience with student information systems like Banner and Navigate.
  • Membership in NACADA or similar student-focused professional associations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with academic advising and support to enhance their educational experience.
  • Promote student recruitment, persistence, retention, and graduation within the college.
  • Apply academic policies accurately and solve problems in a student-focused environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling academic records in accordance with FERPA guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
